No title, just me again

I still haven't decided if I really want to maintain this blog. I had no idea that it was last July when I posted the last time. Don't know that I could ever "catch up" on what's happened in my life, so maybe I could just pick up and go on. I do need a way to document my projects because those little Quilt or Knitting notebooks haven't worked out for me. I am quite good at making something, giving it away and then remembering that I didn't take a picture of it. It's hard to go back and ask the person I gave it to to send me a picture, so I don't.

The other problem that bugs me about maintaining the blog is I keep having difficulties getting pictures to post. And I don't know how to edit the sidebars. And I don't really want to take the time to figure it out.

Finished Socks!

Here's my Sockapalooza 4 finished socks! No posting here lately, so much going on. Maybe after vacation I'll get all the news organized...I have harlot pictures! finished items! Started items!
But we're leaving tonight for China....wow.
Actually we're stopping in London, then Ireland on the way. We plan to arrive in Beijing on August 9th. I'll take pictures, especially of the wedding, and the Great Wall, of course!

Sock Details:
Koigu KPPM, size 2 Addi Lace needles, Embossed Leaves from the IK Favorite Socks.
Lessons learned: The second sock went better. I learned a lot about lace knitting. Fun! I've a new pair started already (for me!).

Weekend Knits

I'm not really sure about dishcloths. I do love to use. the. handknits. but I also hesitate. I usually feel that they should be gifts, not kept for my own use. That's why many of mine are "practice dishcloths". If I try a new pattern and make a lot of mistakes, I often just continue on with the learning process and then knit the pattern again. This weekend, I finally finished the mid-monthly dishcloth for this group.I had problems with the pattern; I just wasn't getting the p2tog-b. I had to check out some instructional websites and then try and try it again.

Above is my first try. I didn't like the border too much, so I changed it for the second try, below:

I did 5 rows of seed stitch then 4 rows of stockinette; I also increased the seed stitch side borders from 3 to 5 stitches. Much nicer. Color is Ecru, yarn is Sugar and Cream cotton.

Next, I was itching to make another "ballband" dishcloth. (Mason-Dixon Knitting). Then I got started on a new slip stitch dishcloth pattern from Creative Knitting. I'm not taking progress photos of dishcloths.

Next topic (tomorrow?): Sockapalooza! (Yeah!, I heard from my sock pal!)
My socks have been started; they aren't for the faint of heart, no matter what Alison says.

I keep on telling myself that it's way past time to post to my blog, but I usually feel like it's too much bother, no one reads it, and I have nothing to say. All true (except my daughter's-in-law are regular readers), but still. I also have nagging thoughts about continually forgetting to document what I'm knitting or sewing. I think about the multiple items I've given away and never taken a picture of... anyway....
Earlier this week I received notice that I had passed my CDE exam successfully! I wasn't surprised that I passed, but it was a great relief to get the official letter and permission to use the credential. It is important to our clinic and a job requirement; since it's budget season for the hospital, it's helpful for the administration to recognize that all the clinic providers are certified! Other than that, we're trying to keep a low profile. I don't know what else we can cut!
Knitting has been lean here in terms of anything noteworthy to show. BUT, I still would like to post my version of Yarn Harlot speaks! I'll aim for getting to that over the weekend...

Stressing and Studying

Yes, wordless Wednesday illustrates my kitchen table study spot. Over the weekend I used a coffeeshop and my office, but in the evenings I have to be home on doggie diuretic duty. I have trouble concentrating at home. I can distract myself with almost anything. Even though I need quiet and a coffeeshop isn't quiet, I can much more easily force myself to stay focused. Nothing staring me in the face and I purposefully don't take along any knitting, for obvious reasons.
So I'm stressing. The plan for tomorrow is to hole up at the coffeeshop. Besides, at the coffeeshop there is coffee. The elixir of life. Here's to getting it done!!
I'm fantasizing about how good I will feel when this is over. Whew! First on the agenda is a nap.

I was at a "sit and sew" at the LQS on Saturday night. This one is called "Stash Busters" and is an opportunity to work on a project of your choice with a teacher present to help with any problems or give advice if needed. It's fun because all the attendees participate by helping anyone who need it! Anyway, during the course of the evening, I wandered through the yarn shelves and stumbled upon some Rowan Cork, which I thought was discontinued (it is). They had more than 1 ball, so I found enough for a small project I'd been wanting to make that specifies Cork. Anyone out there used the stuff? It's a substantial worsted weight, a braided yarn of 95% merino and 5% nylon. It's a dream to knit. The fabric is soft and fabric-like. I'm not really sure how to describe it, but I am finding that it will be perfect for the item I'm making. Can't say more right now.

And here are some visitors that we've had over the past week or so.

Dumb mooses. They eat the good stuff, like the lilac bushes and apple trees. Shoo!

Check this out if you like dishcloths. I joined the KAL. During the first week of the month, several lines of the pattern are given each day. I was told that this one is "Just in time for Easter". The idea is that the design is a mystery until the "reveal" as the pattern emerges...fun!

And on the work front: I'm being a procrastinator of.gigantic proportions. It has to stop.

Tim's birthday was yesterday, and he also got a hat. His was just a plain watch cap as well, in Patons classic wool "forest". Translates to camouflage. I'm hoping it will be a warm and useful item! I forgot to take a picture of it before it went in the mail, which is lame because it's been sitting in a ziploc bag on my project shelf for a month. Maybe Tim will photograph the hat and send me a picture! Maybe Katie can photo it on his head :-) !
I've attached the scanner to my new computer, found the software and installed it, scanned the above picture and uploaded it. For those who are techno-savvy, it's no big deal, but for me, I feel proud of myself. I'll need to work on editing and figuring out how to use it and all, but I ran across this photo as I was going through some papers today. Me bad, I did not write the date on the photo, but I'm guessing 10 and 12? 11 and 13? Anyone? Love you guys!

Yes, just a simple watch cap, but it's wool and it's soft, and it's still really cold here.

Pattern: Watch Cap from Knit Hats for sizing guidance: # of cast on stitches (106), adult large, then "knit by the seat of my pants, so to speak.
Yarn: Patons Classic Wool (in a blue tweedy colorway). What's that called?
Needles: Whatever size, cheapo bambo circs, 16 in.

Recipient response: It was well received.
Knit again? yes.

Yes, this qualifies as "Car Knitting". But enjoyable! And especially so because of the love for my oldest son, and the thoughts of him as I knit. Today is his birthday. Happy Birthday!

Bright and sunny today. We have not had any above freezing days since February 3rd. And snow is predicted for tomorrow night....I'm still suffering with the crud, but back to work tomorrow.

Fabric Crochet

I had fun this past fall learning how to crochet with 1" fabric strips. I took a class at the LQS and made a rug. It was a learning opportunity. But I really wanted to make this bag:

So I did.
This was my birthday present for Mom. Take a peek inside. I lined it with the same fabric which I used for the crochet, and I added a couple pockets to the lining. I covered some plastic mesh to add stability to the bottom. The covered mesh can be removed and the bag can be tossed into the washer...it was an enjoyable project.

And then I made a couple pillow cases, one with the bag fabric. They're quick and easy and make great gifts. Easy man, that's what I love.

I'm sending out a belated birthday wish to my Mom. She turned 88 on Wednesday. What a woman. This picture is from Mom and Dad's 65th anniversary in May of 2005. Lisa modeled all the dresses that Mom had worn to each of the 4 children's weddings. It was so much fun, and each of us posed with Lisa and Mom. This was from my wedding in 1976.
We love you, Mom!

Remember Felting?

I've had a change of heart. And I owe a long overdue apology to my favorite "package ninja" (hi Tim, I love you) for the felting flame. Especially since he and Skor went to the yarn store with me when they were in town. He sneaked a book about felting off the shelves and crawled into a corner and read (very fast) all the secrets. So it's safe now (I give up) to post photos from last fall's guild felting seminar. The few felted projects I'd completed up to that point were all done using a washing machine. At the seminar, we used buckets.

The idea was to felt bowls, but I wanted to make a hat. (I'm a rebel.)

Here's a few of the finished items, drying.

And here's my finished hat. I've worn it all winter. I've been thankful for the warmth, but it's a little itchy.

Procrastination: Darning

I'm the queen of it. This is hard, even for me to believe: I've had six (count them) six pairs of hand knit socks in the "mending basket" for ages. Every time I'd see them (or run out of handknit socks) I'd keep saying (to myself): I need to get them darned! Apparently I don't listen to myself much. However, I did (over a year ago) purchase this lovely darning tool. So I'm working on them. So far I've restored 2 pairs to the wearable sock drawer; this one is almost done. I'm taking precautions and reinforcing the heels that have not worn through. This one is the very first sock I ever knit. I intend to wear them until they simply can't be worn!
I now reinforce all my sock heels with wooly nylon or a second strand of what I'm knitting or a contrasting color. I've learned. I also must be constantly vigilant about filing down my calloused heels because that's the main culprit. So I file and add shea butter lotion. A healthy combo.
Yesterday was Knitters of the North monthly meeting. We have fun with sharing our projects, talking about the charity projects, getting news from various fiber circles, and planning upcoming events. Good times, good people. Next Saturday one of our members is doing a seminar on knitting a top down baby sweater. In April, Nancy Wild is coming to do a hands-on event: hand painting sock yarn...that one sounds like it could become dangerous!

Socks That Rock!

The long awaited shipment arrived this week! I joined the Rockin'SockClub way back when enrollment first opened. In fact I have had my name on the "waiting list" practically all last year. Interesting that I never actually ordered any yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts before. I just took everybody's (in the blog world) word for it: that the socks really did rock and that the yarn was amazing. I agree with Pat that the first shipment "so isn't my colorway". I am thrilled, not disappointed. The yarn is gorgeous, perfectly spun and dyed. I am looking forward to starting the included sock pattern. Pat has started hers, and so has Wendy. Take a look at theirs!
I took a class, once upon a time, that was supposed to teach me toe-up socks using the crochet cast on. It didn't take. I did not get it. I don't understand short rows. I'm holding onto hope that I can actually knit these socks because the garter stitch makes the short row wrapping easier.
I did start socks (Six-Sock-Knitalong) that use the I-cord cast on. That was new to me, seems to work well, and my "Springtime in Paris" socks are on their way....but that's why, along with all the other projects underway, I'm holding off on starting the STR "Monsoon" socks.

My goal is to knit the pattern supplied with each STR shipment. It's another knit-along! I knit very slowly. I probably won't be able to keep up, but at least I'll have the 2007 collection in my stash!

A new week...

I feel sorta like today has come and gone with nothing much to show for it. And then there's the laundry, still to be done. I did go to a lunch at work, honoring employees with 5, 10 and 15 years of service in the organization. Me? I'm a 15 yearer. Does one feel honored, like they've accomplished something OR uneasy at life just moving along without notice? One day you wake up and it's 15 years later...

At some point I will put a few thoughts here about my dear Dad who passed on January 19th. We were at peace about his passing (graduation day, as he called it). The family was together for all the arrangements in Portland, and we had a good time. Lots of memories and sharing. Now we're back to our "lives": making sense out of, and negotiating our individual worlds without our Dad/Grandfather/Husband in it. Endings usher in "first time" events, don't they? Dad was 93.

Here's a progress photo of my current "car knitting" project. A project is a car project if it meets the criteria of "mindless". The traffic always clears, the lights turn green, so one can't be trying to navigate lace or cables when navigating the car...This one is a "charity sweater". It's just Wool Ease (red and black, random stripes). The project comes from Knit for Kids. They always need sweaters and our guild is encouraging members to contribute as a "challenge project". The pattern couldn't be easier and is on the website. I changed it in order to knit on a circular needle. I'll soon divide for the combined sleeves/top.

Thrummed Mittens

Stats:
Pattern: Interweave Knits Winter 2006
Yarn: Harrisville Designs (picked up at Yarn Expo for $4/hank!) 100% Wool
Needles: Size 4.00 and 4.50mm Addi Bamboo (Love them!)
Roving: Unidentified Falklands wool picked up at Yarn Expo. A Ziploc bag full. Pre-dyed in purples/red/dark blue.

What I learned and would change: I would add a few rows between the ribbing and the thumb pick up. My thumb pick up is messy. I'd fix that. (No, I don't like to rip and frog--it's reeeeaaaalllllyyy cold here, and I need to wear these!). Using the roving was interesting, a bit tedious, but feels wonderful on the inside. I'd actually like more of this softness inside....

The thumb is different than the usual mitten thumb. There is no gusset, rather, you knit in some waste yarn, then pick up and knit these live stitches later. Designed this way to maintain the thrumming pattern. I like this, but need to adjust. Maybe I need an extra stitch or two to make the thumb larger and reduce the stress "gaps" at the picked up stitches.

Today was actually warmer (about 20 F) and the sun is significantly warmer plus the days are longer. Love it. I was at a quilt shop this afternoon for the 2nd of two classes using "Buggy Barn" patterns. It was great fun. Quilt pictures forthcoming...

Thinking about blogging again...

I've been thinking about this blogging thing. No posting in a very long time. Should I delete the blog or start again? One of the problems I've had is figuring out how to make my sidebar work and not understanding the gut workings of html and how blogger works. Today I found out that I should switch to the "New Blogger". I am skeptical. I just want whatever I use to work, I don't really want to have to learn computer programming. I don't want any more life frustration...Whatever.
Guess I'll take another stab at it. I enjoy my daily perusing of a limited number of blogs, but I end up thinking that I don't have much to say of any interest. Bear with me as I do some catching up. This may not be interesting.
Several things are new in my life. Like a new laptop computer that actually moves at modern speed. I think I was a victim of Norton Security gumming up my hard drive and bogging down my computer, for one thing. The new computer with wireless has enhanced my life in many ways!
I've been knitting quite a bit and also quilting. I found my camera. And the new computer has this slot in the side of it where a person can stick the SD thingie from the camera. This could be useful. I'll not try to cover it all today, but will take some pictures and do some project photo journaling of those as I go along.
Knitting: Today was our guild informal "Masters and Mentors" group. It was originally formed as a format for those working on TKGA Master Knitter program to get together and compare work, get advice from those who've completed the program, and support those who are working on their credential. Several of our members have completed at least the first level, and at least one has completed all three. Anyway. It's mostly now just a "sit and knit" opportunity and of late it's been a venue for working on charity projects. Today there were only 3 of us....one a "guest" who wanted help with a lovely Aran sweater project...I finished my Thrummed Mittens (insert picture here) and the other member worked on sewing blanket squares (charity project). It's always an enjoyable time. Knitters are good people.
Over the next few days, I'll see how Picassa interfaces with the "New Blogger" and The New Computer. Next: Thrummed Mittens. (Oh, yeah, that brings up the whole subject of "where did I get the roving???")

Please be aware that just because you know the main ingredients used in the experiment, does not mean you will ever be able to figure out how the listed items were used, or in what order. Take note, dear "package ninja", you have not the capacity to ever truely understand the real meaning of the felting mystery.
Note to normal readers:
I'm searching for the camera because the saga is not yet over, and I really think it would be best to "photo document", especially to avoid too many explanations for the above reasons...related to the sneakiness of "package ninja" lurking around my blog. I have no idea what said "package ninja" might be capable of or how he might use "felting technology" should the secret ever fall into his hands....

Felting: Episode One "The Experiment"

In the last post, I mentioned making a felted hat. So I experimented with some very old inherited "Red Heart" 100% wool yarn. (This yarn belonged to my MIL who had great stashes of yarn and fabric which were culled as she downsized into assisted living.) This yarn is so old that the label gives no hint as to how it will behave. I was tripped up a bit by the words "washable colors". I wasn't sure if that meant "superwash" or "colorfast" or what. I think the yarn is old enough that it preceeded the days of superwash wool, though. But I didn't want to spend the time knitting something intended for felting that wouldn't felt. BTW, the 2 skeins were packaged in a plastic bag--original second-hand store packaging which had not been opened--and marked $2. I imagine it was purchased on a 50% off sale day, though. Nice.
So I knit a swatch.
Then the experiment began.
Ingredients included a bowl, very hot water, a potato masher and rubber gloves.
Nice. The swatch felted beautifully.
I can't find my camera, but the experiment was successful enough to cast on for the hat....

Saturday Update

Summer seems to be winding down in Alaska. In the air, you can detect the shift, the changing angle of the sun--the feel in the air. And since it's August, there is the rain. And the clouds. This is the time of year we know it's almost over.
Today was Knit Guild. I'll put a link to the Knitters of the North in the sidebar, once I figure out how to make those categories line up properly. I need tech support, but those people long ago left home. Lots of new guild stuff going on: a new challenge for the fall that I am heading up along with attempting to infuse new life and excitement in the group by starting some local "swaps". I'll be working to get some files and notices posted in the next week. The upcoming Saturday Seminar next weekend is on felting techniques. I've decided to knit a hat that I can felt.
Now, knitting a hat is not difficult, but the problem is that all I have been knitting over the summer is socks. I'm not sure I know how to knit anything else at this point. Socks have become my automatic "default" and de-stressing aid. So, I'll be working outside my comfort zone this week...
I did find stash yarn to use for the hat. It's so cool to dig into the stash!
But there have been a few purchase episodes this week. Of course for sock yarn! But also some cool and different dishcloth yarns!
Yes, I received notification of my dishcloth swap recipient's details....and I am excited! She likes bright colors, and today's "find" defines the term "bright". I'll be knitting this one with my sunglasses on....which is very appropriate since the recipient resides "down under".
Think I'll check the needle bin and cast-on for the "hat" tonight. Maybe I'll get some pictures posted before too long....It's gonna take a bit to post all the sock fotos. Which I haven't taken yet....

The last months (I guess that means the entire winter and now summer) have been a troubled and "funky" time. I have been too depressed to write positive items in this space. I'm still in that "place" but decided to start posting again. At least I'll post today. I'll try to keep up and just write it as I see it.
I wanted to join a "dishcloth swap"...and for this I needed to list my URL. I didn't want to enter a blog site that hadn't been updated in months. So here I am. Maybe joining another blog based knitting swap will help me get back in the blogging mode.
I won't have pictures for a bit. Or maybe I will. It's just that everything seems to take too much energy. You know, anything "extra".

Dad's Socks

Here it is, the first picture of Dad's sock #1! Try clicking for a better picture. This is the sock yarn that Dani sent me a while back! Thanks again: the sock is knitting up nicely! I am almost ready to start the toe decreases and yes, I'm using 2 circular needles! I'll use the 2 circs for the 2nd sock, but I am not quite sure whether I'll be using this method...I do kinda like it...very little laddering. I'm planning to knit the toes in white...I hope it looks ok! Dad is supposed to wear only white socks, but I think he can get by with these for "special occasions" and I will recommend that he not wear them two days in a row like someone I know...

In other news, dh has been burning the candle at both ends, actually more than both ends.

And, I have been very busy with a new business venture! A good friend from nursing school and I are developing a business together and gathering together a team to work with. We have had long hours working on plans and strategies...I'm pretty tired, but excited to make this move...To be continued...

And I have a secret project in the works...hee hee...need time to finish it, but time is at a premium these days.

Sock musings

Socks, another view
Heres a picture (with streaks of sunlight!) that better show the color of sock pal's socks...and please take note: this is day two. Janet's socks are being washed after a two day stint (and neither the socks nor I are any worse off for it, I might add.) So what could I do but put these back on today? My sock pal said that the color reminded her of what Alaska might be like, but the name of the colorway (Meadow) doesn't fit. Rather, the colors remind me of the Aurora Borealis: the Northern Lights...'tis the season!
Anne said the pattern is from Interweave Knits, one of the latest issues...I'm gonna go look for it...

Sock pal goodies
I was so anxious to see the socks, that I forgot to shoot a picture of the cool bag they were packaged in! And, just this morning as I was checking out the bag, I found this cool tape measure deep in the bottom of the bag! The pull on the tape measure is like one of those skoosh balls. (Is that right? My boys had them when they were kids!) Thank you Anne!

Secret Pal 5 Finale!
Actually, my dear secret pal revealed herself at the proper time. It's just that I have been away from the blog for a while. Busy, and a little "under it"...too much going on, disorganization, etc. Whatever excuse I can manage will work. Her name is Yuvi. She is an Indonesian student, currently residing, studying, and blogging in Malaysia! I so thank her for her generous spoiling and the extreme extra effort it has taken to mail surprises via International Post. This package was held up in customs for some reason or another. It's hard to believe that yummy chocolate, yarn and little gifties are somhow threatening! So sorry, Yuvie, but it all arrived in good order, once I phoned Fed-Ex and supplied them with my SSN...
Look at this yarn! I love it! It is Katia, made in Spain. It is 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. I think it will make really cute socks!

High quality sock yarns! What else? Wool, superwash merino and the like...

3) What type of needles do you use most often?
Small double points and recently small addi turbos for 2 circular socks. Other than addis, I prefer bamboo.

4) Do you like to knit in the round?
Absolutely!

5) Do you use a magic loop method or any other we should know about? Are you interested in learning a new method?
I am interested in learning magic loop...I just began using the 2 circular needle method, and have size 1's at 24 inches. I tried 16 inches, but did not like that length.

It's been a long time. I have been so busy, I can't even begin to speak of everything. You will notice that I will try, though.

Work
It has been Ugly at times. Draining. Lack of professionalism. Stuff I have to deal with very soon. Ugh. Saps the strength...
Hubby's work has been non-stop the past few weeks. Day and night. It's getting old, and I am worried about him.
Health
After a HUGE (sorry for shouting) struggle with insurance company (evil) I finally was able to get my new insulin pump. Hurrah! It is very cool and is allowing me to get better control. It has features I have been needing for years. See my new Cozmo pump here. Of course I got the purple one!
I have had Type 1 diabetes for 42 years now (since age 8). I have had an insulin pump of various sorts for 23 years. Not that anyone really needs to know that, but out of the closet I come. It is a struggle, daily. It sucks. But I am managing it. I try not to complain!
The Dog
She's wonderful. Will need another haircut soon. The eye doc said she's doing great! Meds 2-3 times per day. Snores like a banshee...(hmm. I'm not really sure what a banshee is. should google it. hope it's not something dark that I shouldn't talk about.)

Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. What knitting??? Where are the pictures???
Um, soon. Camera battery dead. No good place to pose. I started socks for dad on 2 circular needles and I am heading down the foot on sock #1. The jury is out. I am not entirely sure what I think about the method. It's ok. I think I like it, will definately do the second sock on circs...addi turbos are the bestest. Not much other knitting news...
Saturday I helped out at the guild Sock Seminar. That was fun and it was neat to see some ladies learn socks for the first time! Oh, yes, I did make a baby sock...and today I found it in the bottom of my bag, off the needles! Aargh. It's a funky cute yarn and impossible to pick up stitches....

It's time to say hi and 'fess up regarding the non-posting. Here it is: nothing.
Nothing exciting to talk about. Now listen to me go on and on about nothing!
I have sorta not been feeling real well lately, but hoping to dig my way out of it soon. Don't know, just no energy. Extreme fatigue. Not sleeping well to boot. Stuff. I'm off work this week but need to go in and do some paperwork damage control. Tomorrow?
So check out the socks (not sox, mom). They are a pair. Completely finished, ends woven in. AND, I added elastic thread to the ribbed cuff last night. I was worried about the cotton not being snug enough. I think they will be ok; I hope they fit.

They are cute. When I knit in public all questions began with "are you making a baby ____?" It does look like baby yarn.

I am finishing the heel gusset on "mixed berries" sock #1 and have turned the heel on "Friday Harbor". I messed up the pattern on the instep, but am ignoring it. It will be ok. Love the Koigu. Oh, and I put the borders on the latest quilt. Hope to finish putting the backing together in the next couple days and hook up with the machine quilter soon...I have some baby quilts that are on the cutting mat at the moment.
Lots to do, I am currently behind in almost every life category. Later...

Friday Harbor
My sanity has to be questioned. I just started this sock last night. It took me 5 tries to get the cuff in some sort of shape that allowed me to go on with the sock. It involved sneaking out to the living room after DH was asleep to continue knitting. It has captivated me most of the day. I'm not sure if it is the Koigu KPPPM (never knitted with the stuff before) or the charted "lace" pattern or wondering if it would even fit or watching the colors unfold or ??? The combination of these factors is hypnotic or else I am nuts. I have stuff to do. Stuff that has nothing to do with knitting or creative projects. Like I said...

The Roving (click for clearer)
This is called roving. It is the softest, most luxurious substance I have ever touched. So what is it? Well, it's the stuff spinners live for. They use it to work their spinning magic and end up with yarn. I have no idea how this becomes yarn, except that it is spun. It's a cosmic mystery to me. If you want some roving or to learn more, you could visit The Woolen Rabbit which is where I came up with this substance. My secret pal was drooling all over her blog about stuff like this and it turned out that Kim (from the above location) has met my secret pal! How cool is that?? So she helped me pick out some roving that would be suitable for my sp. It has some angora in it, and since my sp is an accomplished spinner, Kim was sure that this roving would be a pleaser! I was thrilled and soooo hope that my sp loves this stuff!

Here's the stack of packages on the way out the door to the post office...On the bottom is my secret pal's final "reveal" gift which includes the roving. The other two are my SP5 "rescue angel" gifts...Apparently there were some sp's that didn't follow through on their committment. Rox did an awesome job...but ended up needing some help in the end so those who were "forgotten" weren't totally disappointed. I am so hoping to finish them quickly before the summer goes away...These are pretty much my own design using the Fortissma Cotton Colori yarn I talked about several weeks ago...One sock is completely finished and I am almost done with the gusset decreases on the second sock. Fun and easy, but it's like knitting dental floss with toothpicks. Since it's for my dear mom, I am safe to say the tiny millions of stitches are all knitted with love and cheer. And watching "Alias" and "24" DVDs while I knitting helps. (BTW, I could never watch that much TV if I wasn't knitting. No way. I'm so not a TV person.) I think I mentioned it months ago, but we are watching these shows now, never having watched them before...we are on season 3 on both, so will be able to join in when the regular season #4 begins in the fall...anyone else hooked on these shows??

This is shepherd's sock once again in the colorway "Mixed Berries". Nice colors, more to my liking than "Rainbow". I'm doing a plain 1x1 rib and the colors are kinda striping/pooling in a pleasing (to me) way. I haven't been working on these much for the past week; I'm trying to get mom's ankle socks finished. But I'm also about ready to cast on for "Friday Harbor" with Koigu since I've joined the Knitting on the Road knit-along; August and September will be devoted to this particular sock. It's seemed to be problematic for some of the group members so I am sure it will be a challenge for me. First off, I need to change the pattern a bit as Nancy Bush has very small feet! A big public, belated appreciation post to my Secret Pal! I received this several days ago and have been having fun looking through it. I've made a list of the projects that are intriguing to me so far. I've wanted to make the Flower Washcloths for a while now...and even have a hank of Cotton Chenille and the right needles! I love the lace-edged pillow cases...this will be fun, since I always try to include a pillow case with my quilts. Pillows look fun and the Berkshire pullover is simple and one wonders if it could really be done in a weekend? I do like the Perfect Pie shawl and who doesn't love the Petticoat Socks?? Now off to work. How can you work when you'd rather be knitting??
Personal News: It went well in spite of my anxiety. The information gathered from the test was helpful. The cardiologist is hitting on my risk factors and is adjusting my medications...I didn't FLATLINE! Life is good!
Family News: Tim and Katie are on a road trip around Alaska. Praying for safety and a good time. John and Steph are working hard and getting ready for their big trip to Germany in a week. They're excited! Whitney is fine, thanks for asking. I need to photograph her new haircut...

What do ya think? They will be warm and they are definitely whacky. If they don't fit, then my sock pal has unfittable feet (and I know that can't be true). But I do have a "Plan B" in the works, in case these are way too whacky for her. I've cast on for another sock in LL in a different colorway that should totally not pool (or at least be more subtle). If my sock pal *hates* these, she will have another choice...and I will wear these. because, after all, I just turned 50 and have decided that I can do what I want.
And I completed sock #1 for my mom. I am planning to post that tomorrow along with the plan B sock start. Ok. Are we good here?
At sit and knit last Friday night, the wonderful knitting teacher totally demystified the kitchener stitch for me. She taught me an easy way to graft toes, and it works wonderfully. The toes on these socks are "perfecto" and I am excited...got toes? send them my way!
On the down side, I have to go have a "stress echocardiogram" tomorrow. This is bugging me: I've done the stress EKG before and it was problematic and involved me being give nitroglycerine. I don't want to do this again, but ya know, it's part of the modern human experience, I guess. Gotta do what you gotta do. See you on the other side!

What's this?
This is what I did last weekend (no, the weekend before this past weekend). Yes, this past weekend I did nothing. At least nothing worth talking about. Oh, wait. Knit Guild. That was (and always is) a fun Saturday afternoon. Our guild is in the process of becoming affiliated with TGKA. It is an active guild. I am the charity chairperson. Lots of knitting goes on in the guild, lots of programs designed to enhance a knitter's repertoire and with an eye toward charity works. Next month the program (Saturday Seminar) will be "Socks", in preparation for members knitting a Christmas stocking for residents of a local women's shelter.
But I digress. The fabric. The picture is just a group of "fat quarters". (If you're a quilter, you know what that is). The fat quarters have morphed themselves into something else, but it's still in progress. Don't know when it will become a FO, but suffice it to say, the borders are cut and the backing is washed.

We spent an evening with my son at his "office". Wow. Amazing. Too cool.
And over the weekend *lots* of knitting was done.
No pictures today of anything other than scenery. It was a good trip. The QUILT is in the hands of the owners, and tomorrow I promise to post a picture. That is, if I get out of my office at a reasonable time. Today and tomorrow were supposed to be days off for me, but some patients got put on my day off schedules anyway. And there's always paperwork to catch up on, so....no time for the headaches I seem to be having a lot of, but that's another story.

Thank you to all for the well-wishes and Happy Birthday wishes! I don't feel any older today than I did yesterday!
DH and I are going to Juneau tomorrow morning to visit our son and his wife and take the -----! I will be home on Tuesday afternoon; be looking for pictures of the ----- next week. Maybe some shots of the glacier as well.
No real knitting news for now, although I am 2.5 inches down the cuff on sock #1 for my mom. I am ready to start the heel as these are going to be ankle socks. So the socks are going with me on the airplane. What else will I take? Oh, I know, more sock yarn. Oh, and the sockapal-2-za socks? I am working up courage to graft the toes. Maybe next week!

Janet's RAOK sock yarn!
This is the promised photo of the amazing new sock yarn that my sister sent. The colors are all mine, mine! It has some mohair content. I want to carry this around with me until I can knit it...I may have to take it to work with me just so I can look at it often.
Sockapal-2-za socks are all done except for the grafting of the toes and the weaving in of the yarn ends! I'm hoping the headache will be abated enough by tomorrow so I can manage the Kitchener toes...I had to start the socks for my mom, I was so sick of the rainbow socks. slap me.
Otherwise, I managed to give the dog a bath today and drive my sick neighbor to a doctor's appointment.
Oh, and I am handsewing the binding to the back of the -----. I can't say or show a picture until the recipients have the item. It is beautiful, I'm so excited with it!

Socks (not sox) for Mom
How could I not start these? I'm very sorry to have to reveal my mom's secrets, but here goes. She's 86. She just bought fuschia colored shoes from Land's End and she tells me that these shoes (and I quote) "could accommodate such socks". She is referring to a previous statement: ..."I'd be glad to have a pair sometime". She stipulated that she would prefer cotton, so this seemed perfect, delicate pinks, light blue and lavender. Looks like baby yarn, but I think it should *match* fuschia shoes! What do ya think?? (oh, I forgot to say that this communication was via e-mail. yep.)

Thanks Janet, for introducing me to Cascade Fixation! The latest sock yarn! This yarn is wonderfully stretchy and there are almost endless possibilities. Life is hard these days, as my sock yarn is keeping me up at night. As the yarn stash builds, the spell gets more powerful. Needlepoint and Crewel Wool
This is 9 hanks of 100% wool needlepoint and crewel yarn. Look at the label pictures below. Each hank is 40 yards and if you are doing crewel work (I don't know about needlepoint) you would separate the plys (it's 3 ply) and work with a single ply. It seems to be fairly loosely plied but I bet you could knit socks if you knit tightly. The color is #55 by Bucilla, and it's a very lovely blue shade. This yarn has been in a stash for a long time, but is in perfect condition. Any takers?? You have to send me your blog address, your email address and eventually a picture of what you used the yarn for. I know there is someone out there who would love this yarn!

Flower Surprise!
Thank you, everyone for your well-wishes! The pathology on the biopsy indicated a benign fibroadenoma. Relief floods me. Thank you, God! I have much empathy for anyone having to go through this process...it is draining.
These were on my porch when I came home from work today (I only worked a half-day). This was a beautiful expression of caring from my co-workers! It's so nice to have supportive people around me! Thank you so much.
AND, another major ROAK from my sister: a box of goodies in true "secret pal" style. I have only begun to open the little gifties. I plan to savor the experience over the next couple days! One of the surprises was a 3 CD set on managing stress and I am looking forward to listening and taking note! Lovely soft sockies, a chubby notebook and smiley faced sticky notes are what I've managed to open and enjoy so far. Thank you Janet! I Love You! and I will post photos this weekend.
Knitting News: None. Ha. Well, I am working on the everpresentneverending sockapal-2-za socks. These seem to be another episode of evidence for the recently discovered "black holes of knitting". I knit and knit and knit somemore and they don't get any longer. I fully realize that they will probably be ripe one morning over the weekend, and I will gladly (I tell you GLADLY) decrease and Kitchener the daylights out of their miserable little toes. Sock Progress
Here they are yet again. I'm bummed because I believe I am a verrrry sllloooowwww knitter. 'Course these are on 2.25 (US#1) needles and I knit tightly, but even so, I am humiliated to still be posting progress pictures on these. I want them to be done. My mom wants me to knit her some anklets and yesterday I got some cute white and pink cotton sock yarn. Wanna see? Yep, as soon as these are fini!
I have joined the ROAK ring! yes! thank you to everyone that made that happen. I will be working on getting the ring code and button on the site, but I don't know how to do it yet...
I also started an on-line course today, subject "The Internet". Should be fun and interesting.

Biopsy over, the wait begins

Thanks for the good wishes. I had the biopsy this afternoon and even though I felt pretty anxious, it was a very *easy* procedure. It was done using ultrasound guidance and core samples were taken of the mass. The lidocaine was effective, so there was minimal discomfort. The radiologist doing the procedure was one I had worked with, so it was nice to chat and he told lots of jokes. Hmmm. I wonder if a woman doing a biopsy of male parts would have the joviality to tell jokes? Anyway, I, myself, prefer the "light notes". Now the waiting. To all the millions of women out there who have gone through this or will go through this, kudos to you.
I get to take a "mental health day" off work tomorrow, so I will be knitting, and promise to post some pictures...
I am still exclusively knitting for sockapal-2-za, and maybe feel the need to work on something else for diversion. Thanks for listening!

I spent some time this past weekend reading the book pictured above. (Trouble today getting blogspot to post properly...) I debated about whether to post about this, but I decided that there might be others out there who are "going through" the same thing. This book is an excellent resource for all things realated to the _____. (I am using caution with certain words, as I don't want my blog to be found through deviant google searches. I'm a nurse; I'm not hesitant to use proper terminology, it's just that this is a Knitting Blog!)
Something suspicious was found on my imaging studies last week, and tomorrow I will have the core biopsies done. The hard part will be waiting for 3-5 days until pathology reports become available. Positive thoughts are in order. Prayers are welcome.
I just wanted to recommend this book. It has now been through 3 editions and is the "_____ Bible". The problem I have is that I am a nurse, and up until a year ago I was an oncology nurse and I also worked with a ______ Cancer Support Group. I know enough to scare myself!
Since I started this, I will end it also. I promise to keep the (very) few of you who read this blog posted, for those who are interested.

Sock Pictures and decisions

Sock two: down the instep
Here's the second sock. Here's the story: I came to a decision a week ago that I haven't written about yet. In my last sock post I was contemplating frogging sock #1 (below). During "knit night" last week, I had the chance to have a very experienced (and calm) knitter look at the socks and comment on them. Actually, I brought the socks hoping she would kindly frog them for me (I was feeling fragile). She offered me chocolate and a listening ear. Wow. She had vast experience with "handpaints" and gave me a hefty dose of reality and reason. She made statements referring to "the beauty of handpainted yarns" and that they often do what they *want to*. She actually liked the sock I wanted to frog better than the one I was ok with. It's good to get another perspective. Soooo I decided to proceed and skip the re-do. These socks are just so different from what I imagined, and in an odd way they are "growing on me". I would wear them, so if my sockapal-2-za pal doesn't like them, I hope she will be kind enough to send them back! As soon as these are finished, I will start a pair that are more "tame", something that can do a stand in act in case these don't end up being loved.

I'm working down the instep on this one, and almost finished the heel flap on the other sock (below). So relaxing, and since I am easily amused, I enjoy seeing how the colors decide to place themselves as I knit. A more intelligent knitter would be bored, as the colors are quite predictable. Here's what I got yesterday!
I'm mad at Barnes and Noble. I was there a week ago looking for this magazine, and they didn't have it. Same thing last night. It was not among the craft magazines in the usual place. Couldn't believe it. Then I happened to look along an adjacent wall and there it was, in a place of honor, with "reader's favorites"! And more copies than could possibly have fit in the rack where it normally lives. Guess the knitters have spoken! So I guess I'm not really mad; but it probably was there last week. They tricked me.
Now, the socks in the book. I am interested in Friday Harbor. But the charts! Can I do the charts??? Perhaps a swatch would be in order. Novel thought...

My Second Bear Sweater

Saturday was the Knitters of the North (Knitting Guild) Teddy Bear Picnic. I though it would be an outdoor event, but because the mosquitos were hungry, the picnic was held inside. Such a fun event! We even had local TV news coverage; below you'll see a picture of one of the news crews interviewing our spokesperson, Catherine. The bear sweaters are headed for the police/fire department's "Buddy Bear" program. They are given out in situations where children are either victims of a crime or trauma or they are involved in a difficult situation that is eased by the presence of a bear "friend". All together we presented about 45 bears, all with handknitted sweaters to the law enforcement organizations. What a success! We had 5 fire department guys stop by, but I was not able to get a photo: they could only stay for a few minutes because of being called to a "code yellow"! Yikes! We all wished that they could have been present for the TV interviews. but the TV news teams (from two different local stations) did a great job with the story: the reporting was accurate and the guild received very positive publicity. We had a good time!

Baby Quilt
Here's the baby quilt I finished this weekend. I'm not that great at the actual quilting, but I made it to the bitter end with this one. I had to finish hand sewing the binding on the way to the shower, but it got finished. Click for a closer view. I hope the new baby will enjoy it, or at least mom hangs it on a wall!

I have a story to tell. The other day I got an email from my secret pal telling me that she had sent a package. Then an email telling me that there was a hold-up on the "shipment" in customs! Customs! Now, when I posted about my felted mittens, my secret pal said she lived in a warm climate and did not know what mittens were used for. (That's me taking some liberty with what she actually said.) But nevertheless, I learned that she lived in a land far away. Talk about interesting, and this was just after Rox posted about secret pals and world peace! So now I *know* where my secret pal lives....(that part is hard unless you have secret pal packages drop shipped from some other location than your home town!) I am going to spill the beans: she lives in Malaysia. Wow. Here's to you, and to all the secret pals out there that are challenged by international shipping! Bravo and Kudos!
Now back to my package. Please, please, take the time to click on the picture to better appreciate the cables in the marvelously lovely knitted gift bag! It is soft and lavender and perfectly knitted and a work of love. It has a soft and unique furry cuff at the top. Now, the customs officials did open the package, but I do not think they took anything. (Here's where I am very glad that they are obviously *not* knitters.) They must have appreciated the love and thoughtfulness that was devoted to this sweet package traveling around the world! It even included a gift for Whitney--the cutest collar! She is very lazy today, laying here amid my quilt fabric stash, snoring loudly. She will definitely model the collar, at least in the next few days...The two balls of yarn pictured say "Cashmere Lamb's Wool" on the label. It is luxurious, a beautiful rosy-burgandy color...Oh, thank you, secret pal! It will be medicine for the hands to knit with this yarn...the label is in Japanese or Chinese (please forgive me) characters, so I don't know too much about the yarn, except that it will make something lovely. Can you see the chibi?? And the thread cutter? These will come in very handy to tote in my knitting bag, especially with the airline scissor problems! Look at the darling origami doll! Amazing! I got a set of origami papers: a kit to make something lovely. It has pictured directions which will come in handy! Thank you secret pal, you waaaay outdid yourself! I can hardly wait to meet you on your blog! I have lots of questions!

Unbelievalbe. This arrived at the same time! Lorna's Laces: 2 hanks in Amethyst Stripe. Beautiful! My secret pal said that sock yarn was hard to come by where she was living...and no wonder. Do people in the south Pacific even wear socks? Whenever we travel to warm climates, we wear sandals. Hmm. This was sent from my secret pal via Sue at Little Knits. I have not checked out this site yet, but she said her yarn is on sale. Thank you secret pal! You have gone way above and beyond the call of secret pal fun making! You know I love Lorna's Laces and purpley colors! I have sooo many socks I want to make, and so many different patterns I want to try. (I am definately at the SABLE critical point.)
Off work today because I don't feel good...So this was a very bright spot after another doctor visit yesterday!

Cousins??

This is so hard. I think I will bid a fond fairwell to
sock #1 (actually the one on the right). The one I
introduced last week. I have worked with this guy. I frogged (because of a mistake that I couldn't overlook). I have spoken nicely and severly. I have thought both good and bad thoughts. This sock won't behave. I even moved the yarn and continued on in a different sequence. I don't know my sock pal well enough to know if she is into "strange and funky" socks. I'm kinda mad because I kinda want to just go on with it and if they are too funky, I could keep them for myself and start again with a less behaviorly challenged yarn for my sock pal. (I am a product knitter.) Thanks, Alison. It's too far gone to be a gauge thing, I think. The one on the left (the second sock I started) is much more "normal" and behaving like a perfect child. I even like it better, much better. The trick is exactly how to start again in the same place in the color sequence. It's a very good thing that I have a couple more months to get this "better" (notice, I did not say "right"). I still enjoy the LL yarn, but until I figure this out, I am sticking with a yarn that is more well-behaved color-wise!

There's more on the needles, but I am only admitting to this one today. It's just a washcloth. New knitters be comforted. I am one, and soft washcloths still are "fun". Dishcloths too. This yarn was for the flower facecloth pattern, but it's going to be a plain basketweave facecloth so I can test the yarn for absorbency. It's a scientific experiment. Hmm. Maybe I could get some funding, a grant perhaps, to conduct knitting experiments.
I suppose this is "comfort knitting" when the sockbehaviouly-challengedmisbehaving knitting gets to be too much.

Misc Stuff, Knitting and what-not

Not much knitting time with working and life "stuff". Pictures *later* of "the socks". I don't know whether or not to be distressed about "the socks". I began the 2nd sock, and not only is it a "fraternal twin" but maybe not a twin at all; more like a 2nd cousin. I would not have guessed that the same yarn would have knitted up so differently, based on where it was started, I guess...Hmmm...wondering what others do, and if it is a serious problem. Do I frog and try again? How can a person calculate where to begin with the matching sock? And in my haste to start the 2nd sock, I accidentally snipped the yarn and now I am at the knot that DH tied before we wound the yarn...now I need to graft the yarn together *or something like that*: don't want a knot in a sock, for crying out loud!
News in the Great Land includes rampant wild fires. 'Tis the season. Woke up Tuesday night at 1am to a pungent burning smell: the winds had shifted and smoke from the Kenai peninsula fires had drifted into my bedroom. Ugh. Batten the hatches and sweat.
Tomorrow night is my Friday night quilting session. Not sure what I'll work on. It's been a draining work week and my energy level is low. But these sessions provide "motivation" to finish projects and a fun time with other quilters... Pictures? I promise more later in the weekend. Stay tuned!

Sock Revealed

I'm totally in love with Lorna's Laces: the feel, the knittability and smoothness! Being a new knitter, making this sock has caused me some angst. I want it to fit my pal. So I made the decision to go with comfort and (hopefully) fit. The top 2 inches is 2x2 rib with US 1.5 needles. Then I switched to 1x1 rib with US 1s. It's been fun watching the pattern change with the change in rib. Since I am a lover of "cool" colors, I want to see more of the blue and purple, and I want the purple to not always be combined with the red. But you take what you get and it's interesting to watch the color "stripes" spiral around the sock. It's wild how the hank to ball to sock progression isn't at all what I imagined (being inexperienced with yarn and its wild ways). I *like* this colorway, but I wouldn't necessarily choose it for myself. I think it may be perfect for my pal, though! We shall see.

This is the yarn pictured a few days ago. Look: I wound one of the hanks. The wound ball looks like a box of crayons or a bowl of mixed sherbet flavors! How will it knit up? I had a long conversation today with my sister about (what else?) sock knitting. My faith had been wavering, in fact, I had planned this next post to be one of the frogged yarn from the cotton colori sock. But I was convinced to hold off and wait a bit longer. I will continue on with the sock and keep the faith. I haven't completely decided what pattern to use for this Rainbow yarn, though. The colorway is decidedly interesting. To be continued...

The start of a new pair...

My faith is weak. This is 2x2 rib on size 1. Started on size 1.5, switched after 5 rounds. My swatch gave me 9 st/inch. So I cast on "according to the book". I consider this practice: my sockapal-2-za pal prefers a looser fit at the calf, so I'm trying a less binding type rib. But they look like they will be way to large. It's cotton, like I posted previously. Will it shrink??
These are for me; will they be "slouch" socks? I already ripped them out once yesterday. I hate to rip socks...so I am wavering, not believing that they will be fine, but not wanting to rip. If they are 4 inches long, the frogging will be more painful. What's a girl to do??
Since it's looking like I will be late to work if I keep this up, I have no choice but to let them stew for a day or so...To be continued.

I had a conversation with my sister today. I asked her how many batches of sock yarn she had--meaning how many different sock yarns to make how many potential pairs of socks. I told her that I was not trying to give her a bad time; rather I wanted to make myself feel better. She said 10. I did a quick count and he he, I have only 7. I must be a better woman. Well, you see, pride cometh before a fall...That was before I went to the LYS for an innocent set of #3 dpns. Like I said, it wasn't my fault. Look what I ended up with! It's 75% cotton and 25% nylon. I think it will be perfect with jeans.
Now I know that some family members read this blog. Please calm down. The sock yarn vs drinking at the bar: it could be worse, much, much worse. And for those who are still concerned: I *promise* to discuss the problem with my therapist.

Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Rainbow!
I ordered some of this yesterday from Knitting Zone. Their Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock is $9 a hank, a decent price compared to the LYS. My idea was to use this for my
Sockapal-2-za sock pal. I'm still not sure, since my sock pal seems to prefer socks with some cotton content. So I may keep looking. I am sure that no matter what I decide, this yarn will be loved and eventually knitted into a yummy pair of socks!

Stay tuned: not much progress on anything this weekend. I always seem to need Saturdays to recoup after the work week, especially when the past few weeks have contained more than the average amount of stressful work-related "stuff". But back to the important life stuff:
I am ready to start the toe decreases on the 2nd Purple Splendor Sock. Goal is to wear them this week! Will it happen? Like I said, stay tuned!

I am "working" (which means anything from 'thinking about', 'planning', 'cleaning off the work space' to actually 'cutting and sewing') on the current quilt backing. My goal is to take all the parts and pieces: the finished top, the finished backing, the finished binding, and the batting to the machine quilter by next weekend. Pictures of the quilt will only be posted after the recipients have it on their bed! But it will be soooo gorgeous, I can hardly wait!

The Mittens go Outside

The Felted Mittens
Oh yeah. I finshed the palms and they are going to be shipped out to the son in Juneau. Yes, it's summer. I know it, but it is Alaska and camping trips can easily require such garb. I used Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted in Pine Shadows and Dark Charcoal (two strands held together). Yes, they are huge. DH said you could crawl inside them and they could double for sleeping bags. Well, the hands that these are for are quite large, larger than mine or my DH's. The recipient has tried them on.
I need to use a smaller needle for the ribbing next time. The pattern is Fiber Trends. The palms are from a local leather supplier: black suede which I bought by the pound. I have oodles for more mittens.
